Cara Taylor: How a Small Alabama Agency Put a Volleyball Player on the Chanel Runway

The day after a small agency in Huntsville, Alabama signed a 15-year-old volleyball player it had found on Instagram, 14 New York agencies asked for her. Three weeks later she was walking New York Fashion Week. That model is Cara Taylor, and her rise is the clearest working example of a structure most aspiring models never hear named: the mother agency. She won no competition and knocked on no doors in New York. A two-woman agency in a city with, in her own words, "one big building that's like 12 stories" found her, and the machinery did the rest.

Found on Instagram, between volleyball practices

Cara Taylor was born on 23 April 2001 in Huntsville, Alabama. She was not pursuing fashion — she played volleyball at Grissom High School, and her Instagram account was an ordinary teenager's account. Onyx Model Management, a local agency founded by Brittney Flanders and Janna Park, found her there.

She describes the moment without polish. "When I turned 15 I was just found by a mother agency in my town, and then we got in all of these requests from different agencies and we're like, whoo, what the heck is happening," she said in a filmed day-in-the-life piece. What followed was a household decision: she and her mother agreed she would leave public school for online school so she could work. "It really has changed my life," she said. "I've grown up in a different way than most people have."

What a mother agency actually does

The 14-agency stampede makes sense only once you understand the role Onyx played. A mother agency does not book you jobs in Paris. It finds you locally, develops you, and places you with the large agencies in the major markets, keeping a share of what you earn and a long-term stake in your career. Flanders described the job plainly to a local broadcaster: "We are known as a mother agency, which is basically a manager for models. We find local talent and then we place them into bigger markets like New York, LA, Paris, Milan, London."

Onyx scouts across Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi and Georgia — none of them fashion capitals — and by 2018 had placed eleven models with major agencies. Taylor today is represented by eight agencies at once: Ford Models in New York and Paris, Next Management in Paris and London, Monster Management in Milan, The Squad in London, Modelwerk in Hamburg, Freedom Models in Los Angeles, Le Management in Copenhagen, and Onyx in Huntsville as her mother agency. That network, not any single contract, is what a top-tier career looks like structurally. Our guide to getting into a modeling agency covers the same route from the applicant's side, and you can compare real agency profiles before you send anything.

Alexander Wang, a haircut, and a first casting

Her first casting ever was Alexander Wang, and she did not behave like someone who knew the stakes. "I'm a Chatty Cathy, so I talk to everyone, even if it's in the wrong environment," she recalled. "I was just talking my head off, and then when I left I realized Alexander Wang was there, and he hugged me, and I was like, I'm never washing this off." Her verdict on the industry surprises most newcomers: "I just didn't expect fashion designers to be nice, but they actually really are."

The booking came with a condition. "The next day they're like, well, if you want to get the show, you're going to have to cut your hair and dye it. I was like, all right, let's do it." The result — a bleached bob — became the look that launched her as an Alexander Wang exclusive for the Spring/Summer 2017 season. Her own verdict on it was less romantic: it worked for the show, but not in real life. Instead of going to the after-party, she went to a salon and dyed it back the same night.

An exclusive means the model walks one designer and no one else before them: agencies trade breadth for prestige. In Taylor's case the bet paid immediately. According to media reports, she went on to close Christian Dior's Spring/Summer 2017 show and to open Chanel at her first Paris Fashion Week.

Forty-one shows in a single year

The season that followed is the part aspiring models should study. In 2017 Taylor walked 41 shows, including Alberta Ferretti, Balmain, Stella McCartney, Michael Kors, Dolce & Gabbana, Céline, Fendi, Ralph Lauren, Dior, Chanel and Versace — a punishing schedule across four cities in a matter of weeks, run by a 16-year-old who had been playing high school volleyball a year earlier.

Volume at that level converts a debut into a career. One exclusive gets a name noticed; 41 shows in a year make a model a known quantity to every casting director in the business, which is why models.com later placed her on its Top 50 list. Consistent bookings, not one lucky job, are what build a book — and anyone working through open casting calls is running a smaller version of the same maths.

From runway girl to campaign face

Runway is exposure; campaigns are income. Taylor converted. She has appeared in advertising for Calvin Klein, Salvatore Ferragamo, Hugo Boss, Fendi, Michael Kors, Tom Ford, Prada, Mango, Coach New York, Saint Laurent, Diane von Fürstenberg, Marc Jacobs and Reebok, and has been shot by Steven Meisel, Juergen Teller and Mario Sorrenti. By 18 she was the face of Ferragamo's Signorina Ribelle fragrance — a role she described in the campaign's own video with characteristic bluntness: "As a rebel, in certain situations I am very stubborn, and I am also very outgoing."

Durability matters more than any single credit. Nearly a decade after that Alexander Wang casting she is still working — a Massimo Dutti campaign in autumn 2025, the Proenza Schouler Summer 2026 campaign, editorial work into 2026. Careers that begin with a viral debut frequently end within two seasons; hers did not. Her catalogue entry is on our own Cara Taylor profile.

What her path teaches a model starting today

Three things transfer. The scout came to a public, ordinary account, not a professionally styled one — the opposite of what most advice assumes; our piece on Instagram strategy for models covers what agencies actually look at. The local agency was not a consolation prize but the entire mechanism: a regional mother agency in Alabama, not a New York cold submission, opened every door. And note what Taylor gave up in week one — her hair, her school, her hometown routine. The industry moved fast because she could, and that has a cost worth counting in advance.
