    Stefan Dotter

    Dotter was born in Bamberg, Germany, in 1993. His work spans fine-art, documentary, and fashion photography. His practice is grounded in a quiet and poetic visual language shaped by his long engagement with Japan—marked by disciplined composition, tonal restraint, and an interest in the emotional architectures that emerge in moments of pause and retreat. Between 2019 and 2020, Dotter worked as a photography teacher for the United Nations in Afghanistan. His close relationship with his students led him to spearhead an effort involving 100 photographers to successfully evacuate them in 2021. Dotter’s first monograph, RECORD, documenting natural habitats and indigenous communities in the Amazon, Borneo, and Madagascar, was published in 2025. He has worked on editorial campaigns, catalogues, and commissions for Chanel, Hermés, Issey Miyake, and Loewe, amongst many others. His work has been exhibited in London, Paris, and Tokyo, and published in the British Journal of Photography, The New York Times and Vogue, among many others. Dotter lives and works in Tokyo.
