From tomboy to top model, Janaye Furman has been defying expectations since the beginning of her career.
An LA girl born and raised, the city was Janaye’s playground. She spent her childhood camping, swimming, hanging in her tree house, and exploring the city. Modeling was NOT on her radar, nor were the glitz and glam. All she knew was she wanted to be known. Janaye wanted to be famous.
One day while in the audience of her acting college’s improv show, Janaye was scouted by a modeling agent, and the rest was history. Literally.
Janaye Furman made history in the modeling industry in 2017 by being the first Black woman to ever open a fashion show for Louis Vuitton, and she didn’t stop there. She was a part of the first ever beauty campaign for Hermes in 2020. Some of her favorite works from her career so far include the Steven Meisel British Vogue cover in 2021, as well as projects for Moschino, Schiaparelli, and Paco Rabanne.
Aside from modeling, Janaye’s passions lie in acting, music, and art. She developed her own Afro Comb brand called Riot Picks in 2022. When Janaye realized that the public was looking to her for Black representation in the modeling industry, she developed the brand to open a conversation and celebrate her history through her platform. The handmade afro picks are designed to speak to the culture. Honoring and preserving its history as not only a grooming tool, but as wearable art.
Janaye has no plans to slow down. She hopes to be on the covers of more magazines, make more music, act, create, and be a positive role model in the industry.
