- What do New York modeling agencies look for?
- It depends on the board, not on the city: fashion divisions have historically worked to sample sizes (around 175 cm and up for women, 185 cm and up for men), while commercial, curve and talent divisions set no height rule and book on castability. Age, proportions, healthy skin and hair, and the ability to take direction matter everywhere — check each New York agency's own requirements page before you submit, since the divisions differ.
- Do modeling agencies in New York charge a fee?
- A legitimate agency does not charge to represent you: it earns a commission on the work it books for you, typically around 20%. Paying up front for "registration", a mandatory portfolio with an agency-appointed photographer or a "course" is the classic sign of a scam — in New York as anywhere else. Costs that are genuinely normal (test shoots you commission yourself, travel, a printed book) are your own and never a condition of being signed.
